FACULTY SENATE MOTIONS - 1993-94

SEPTEMBER 14, 1993
Motion #34-01:

The Faculty Senate requests that the FIU Administration strongly support the activities of the FIU Judaic Studies Institute and, where appropriate, foster hiring initiatives by departments and programs which would increase the number of scholars at FIU who teach and do research issues and topics related to Jewish religion, tradition, history, and culture. This motion is necessitated given the population demographics of the Miami area and the paucity of such faculty members currently at FIU.

Motion #34-02:

The Faculty Senate submits that FIU inform Chancellor Reed that it rejects the TIP proposal (Teaching Incentive Plan) and the money that goes with it. (This motion passed with a vote of 24 for, 3 opposed, 2 abstentions.)

The Faculty Senate approves Curriculum Committee Bulletin #1.

Motion #34-04:

The Faculty Senate approves the Graduate Student Grievance Policy (dated 9/7/93) with the amendment on page 2, line 3 inserted to read "sexual harassment and" following "This policy does not address issues related to..." and before "discrimination based on...".

Motion #34-05:

The Faculty Senate approves Curriculum Committee Bulletin #2

Motion 34-06:

The Faculty Senate approves the proposed revised Core Requirements for lower division students.

Motion 34-07:

The Faculty Senate directs that the Undergraduate Council be charged with preparing a proposal to augment the Modern Language Requirement to the Core Curriculum.

Motion #34-08:

The Faculty Senate approves Curriculum Committee Bulletin #3 with the following corrections: (1) Journalism & Mass Communication (p.14), core requirement change: ADD the words "and delete MMC 3602, Mass Media and Society. (2) Journalism & Mass Communication (p.30), PUR 5607, title should be "Advertising and Public Relations Management."

Motion #34-09:

The Faculty Senate approves the MS in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

The Faculty Senate approves the Graduate Assistant Policies and Procedures.

Motion #34-11:

The Faculty Senate approves the Implementation Request for Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.

Motion #34-12:

The Faculty Senate approves the Doctor Of Education (Ed.D.) Degree Program In Curriculum And Instruction With A Track In Modern Languages/Bilingual Education.

Motion #34-13:

The Faculty Senate approves the Implementation Request For A Ph.D. In Geology.

Motion #34-14:

The Faculty Senate approves the Feasibility Study And Authorization To Plan For A Ph.D In History.

Motion #34-15:

The Faculty Senate approves the Implementation Request For A Master of Arts In English contingent upon Senate Approval of appropriate courses.

Motion #34-16:

The Faculty Senate approves the Implementation Request For A Master of Arts In Political Science. This motion, dealing with the Core, is included in Motion 34-17.

Motion #34-17:

The Faculty Senate approves Curriculum Committee Bulletin #4 with the following corrections: (1) EIN 6994 Advanced Production Planning and Control; title should be: Advanced Production Planning and Control.

Motion #34-18:

The Faculty Senate approves Curriculum Committee Bulletin #5 with the following temporary deletions pending resolution of an objection: GLY 6XXX -Watershed Hydrology, GLY 6XXX - Groundwater - Surface Water Interaction, GLY 6XXX - Sediment Dynamics, GLY 6XXXL - Sediment Dynamics Laboratory.

Motion 34-19:

To avoid any potential conflict of interest, faculty are encouraged to avoid instances where their students are family members by directing those students to equivalent courses taught by colleagues. In those cases where coursework is not available from any other professor, faculty are encouraged to follow the following guidelines in order to ensure objectivity in teaching and grading:

Another faculty member should be responsible for grading class written products when possible; class assignments should be consistent for all students in the class student tests should be graded by another member of the faculty when possible; faculty member should not be the student's advisor nor a member nor chair of the program of studies, thesis or dissertation committee.

Motion 34-20:

The University shall develop and present to the faculty a timetable for hardwiring faculty computer terminals to the University computer system to, among other advantages, provide real-time access to student academic records for advising purposes.

The Faculty Senate approves the Undergraduate Policies & Procedures Manual with the following change: Item 2.6.2 - APPEAL OF DISMISSAL, Section D (under Procedures) should read as follows: No appeal may be granted if a student's term GPA falls below 2.0 while he/she is on probation.
